The Kid from Brooklyn
Danny's fourth film is a mad roller coaster of fun. The movie opens with the Goldwyn Girls serenading a cow at a dairy. I wonder what they've given to said cow, to keep it so calm amongst these women tying flower garlands to it while waving said garlands about, and moving all around. One of the Girls looks decidedly nervous in a closeup, perhaps the cow was trying to sample her uniform?
The Girls finish their song, and we discover it's actually part of an advertisement for Sunflower Dairy, which is being shown to the milkmen as part of a training session. Burleigh Sullivan (Danny) is one of the milkmen watching the advert. The President of the dairy is there, to go over the sales figures, and talk about how to increase them. While the President is congratulating achieving milkmen and discussing how to get everyones sales up, Burleigh develops hiccups. A couple of his fellow workers think it would be funny to play a practical joke on him, so they pass him a cup of water that they've put ink into. The President isn't appreciating all the hiccupping, so Burleigh drinks down the concoction before realising what's in it. With a blue tongue, Burleigh and his coworkers are sent out to work.
Agnes, Burleigh's horse who pulls the milk cart, is pregnant. She follows him like a dog, responding to whistles to move up the street as Burleigh jumps over steps and window sills, delivering milk and dairy products. During the delivery, Agnes falls to the street. The baby is due! Burleigh goes into full panic mode, running up and down the street, calling for help, waking everyone. (After all, it IS very early in the morning!) A window opens, and Virginia Mayo offers to let Burleigh use her phone to call the vet.
Virginia, or Polly as her character is called, is a singer looking for work. Danny's sister, Susie (Vera Ellen) is a dancer at a club, and he thinks he can get Polly work there.
Next scene is a fabulous dance sequence for Vera Ellen. Boy could she move.
When Susie (Vera Ellen) leaves the club, she goes to meet Burleigh. Two drunks block her way and start hassling her. She calls for help and Burleigh comes running. The three start scuffling and Susie runs off to get more help. When she returns, Burleigh is standing there, and the two drunks are out cold on the pavement.
The story is all over the papers, because one of the guys knocked out just happens to be the current Middleweight Champion of the world! His manager is livid at the news, and is yelling at his boxer when Burleigh arrives - just as the boxer was claiming how huge the 'other guy' was! The manager, Gabby, wants to know what happened, and as Burleigh explains how he is the master of ducking after being teased a lot at school, he demonstrates, and Speed (the Champ) and Spider (his training partner and fellow drunk from the night before) knock each other out again - just as the press walk in. Burleigh's all over the papers again - twice in 24 hours! Gabby decides he's going to make Burleigh a boxer, so he can get him some rigged fights then pit him against Speed and clean up on the betting.
Danny returns to Polly's apartment. He's got a great idea, to get Polly a job! (Polly sings to prove she can do it.) He calls the Dairy President, telling him he should use Polly on the billboards to sell the milk. The President is so angry at being woken, he fires Burleigh.
When Danny returns home he discovers Gabby is there with Speed and Spider, and Ann, Gabbys' girlfriend. They try to convince him to become a fighter, but Susie arrives and together they throw out the entourage. Polly calls, and Gabby overhears how Danny lost his job, so he sweet talks Danny into signing the contract, after all, you can't impress a woman when you don't have any money!
Next scene - training camp. Danny has brought Agnes and her colt along, as good luck charms. He has to learn how to fight [insert Danny slapstick here] so Ann teaches him using a waltz, with dancing he'll hopefully learn some footwork - fabulous scene. Polly and Susie arrive, in order to try to talk Danny out of fighting. Speed sees them arrive, and tells Spider he'll make a move on Susie, so Danny will get mad and try punch him, then Speed can knock him out in front of the Press who are watching the training. Speed goes over to Susie, taps on her shoulder and sweeps her into a kiss. But something's wrong - they both enjoy it, and Danny takes Polly off somewhere else to be alone. Danny was told by Gabby that Polly wanted to marry him (all lies, just to keep Danny from leaving) and Danny tells Polly he's glad and gives her a ring (which was Ann's, Gabby 'borrowed' to give to Danny for Polly, as long as he signs a $2,000 promissory note for the ring, endebting him to Gabby). Polly is surprised, she barely knows him. But she sees what a sweet man he is, and agrees. Now the problem is Danny HAS to fight, to pay for the ring, at least.
So off he goes, rigged fight after rigged fight. Now, remember, Danny doesn't know the fights are rigged, as he flails away the other fighters keel over constantly, and he starts believing his own press about his so called capabilities. The dairy President decides to buy Burleigh's contract, so he can now be called 'The Fighting Milkman', for $50,000 from Gabby (who of course is ecstatic). When Burleigh arrives home from six months of working his way up the ranks to the championship bout, a circus explodes as Burleigh gets out of his train in full cowboy gear, with accompanying American Indians, as a marching band play welcome and the Goldwyn Girls sing along. Polly is astounded at Danny's grand standing and boasting, but Danny doesn't notice as he takes his followers off thru the station.
[insert song and dance number for Virginia and Vera Ellen at a big social do]
Danny ruins Virginia's song with an overblown entrance. He comes dancing in with Russian dancers and sings 'Pavlova' (his only song in this movie) to the delight of the society crowd watching. The society dame who is hosting the soiree is fascinated by Burleigh, so he shows her how to duck and move, and the two end up chasing each other about a room. Polly walks in and tells Burleigh he's changed too much, and the sweet Burleigh is gone, and gives him back his ring.
Meanwhile Susie overhears about Gabby rigging fights so Speed can flatten Burleigh in their bout, and pleads with Speed not to go thru with it. Burleigh reappears, arrogant and full of hot air, treating his sister pretty poorly. She changes her mind, goes to Speed and tells him to teach her brother a lesson.
The Big Fight. Burleigh brings his colt, for good luck. Not so lucky for Speed, he's kicked in the face by the horse, and sent sprawling. While he's down, he's given sleeping drugs by accident, Gabby was intending to wake him up! Speed gets out into the ring, half asleep. Danny comes out, and starts his usual flailing about. You've got to see this fight to believe it.
I'm not going to ruin the end of the movie - you'll have to watch it for yourself to see. Will Danny win? Will he win back the heart of Polly? I give 'The Kid From Brooklyn' 4 stars, it's funny, great writing, great acting. Add it to your Danny collection, it's a must!
