Danny and Sylvia: Headed for New York City (September 2002)

Yes, the headline is correct. True to its reputation as "plucky" and "power-packed," Danny and Sylvia: A Musical Love Story, is making its way to New York City, The American Century Theater announced today. Danny and Sylvia will be one of three main stage productions in the "Chip Deffaa Invitational: The New New York Theatre Festival." With artistic guidance of two-time Tony Award winner Thommie Walsh, the show will run for three weeks at the Chashama Theatre at 135 W. 42nd Street, just east of Broadway, from September 5-23.

"The success of Danny and Sylvia shows what can happen when talented, committed people are determined to make a wonderfully fresh project happen." said Jack Marshall, artistic director, TACT. "It shows even more significantly, how the love of audiences brings magic. The audience love for Danny and Sylvia is propelling the show to New York. It is particularly fitting that the production find a new home in New York since both Danny and Sylvia were both born and raised there."

Brian Childers will reprise his Helen Hayes (2002) and his Theatre Lobby Mary Goldwater (2001 - 2003) award winning role as Danny Kaye, who is a reincarnation of the singing comedian. Perry Payne will once again take on the role of Sylvia Fine. The musical follows the rise of Danny Kaye from an undisciplined improvisational comic to an international star under the guidance of Sylvia Fine, his mentor, lover, manager and wife. At this performance, there was solid applause for every number...of show-stopping fervor.

"I am thrilled that New York audiences will have the chance to experience what Washington audiences have," said Bob McElwaine, who wrote the book and lyrics and who was Danny Kaye's publicist for over a decade. McElwaine and Bob Bain, who wrote the music, created over two dozen new songs for the fast moving musical that are joined with some of Kaye's signature songs such as "Anatol of Paris," "Tchaikovsky," and "Minnie the Moocher."

Danny and Sylvia is the longest running show in the history of The American Century Theater, having 65 performances since its workshop opening.
