Mai Zetterling biography

Actress, director. (b. May 24, 1925, Vasteras, Sweden; d. Mar. 17, 1994.)

A beautiful blonde, Zetterling won her first major role at age 19, starring in 'Torment' (1944), from a script by master of anxiety Ingmar Bergman. She subsequently made several films in Britain before coming a long way to America to play opposite Danny Kaye in the 1954 comedy 'Knock on Wood'.

While she had what it took to be groomed for stardom, she loathed Hollywood and hightailed it back to Europe immediately after finishing the picture. She performed in a number of British productions, including 'Abandon Ship!' and 'The Truth About Women' (both 1957), and 'Only Two Can Play' (1962).

Shore also starred in several motion pictures, recorded more than 70 hit songs, and increased the popularity and acceptance of women's professional golf with her Dinah Shore Classic, a major Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament she hosted beginning in 1972. She won eight Emmy Awards (1954-1957, 1959, 1973, 1974, 1976) and was honored with a George Foster Peabody Award, recognizing excellence in broadcasting, in 1958.
