Dinah Shore biography

Shore, Dinah (1917-1994), American popular singer and television (TV) performer, noted for her charm, her distinctive voice, and her longevity in show business. As a vocalist, she made numerous hit recordings and was extremely popular entertaining military troops during World War II (1939-1945). Her subsequent television career spanned three decades.

Born Frances Rose Shore in Winchester, Tennessee, she began performing on radio in Nashville, Tennessee, while earning a degree in sociology from Vanderbilt University. She then moved to New York City where she became a National Broadcasting Company (NBC) staff singer in 1939. In 1940, at the age of 23, she signed a recording contract with Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and performed regularly on a number of radio programs. By 1943 she had a radio show of her own. She also made more than 300 broadcasts for the Armed Forces Radio Service during her career.

Shore began working in TV in 1951 with the 15-minute "The Dinah Shore Show" (1951-1957), which broadcast twice a week. In 1956 she began hosting a one hour prime-time variety series (programs that combine various performances, such as skits, songs, or comedy routines) on NBC, "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show" (1956-1963). Her folksy and unpretentious manner made her a symbol of grassroots America. During the 1960s she appeared mostly in TV specials and briefly in a daytime variety show. In 1970 she began a daily NBC talk show, "Dinah's Place" (1970-1974), which later became a 90-minute daily syndicated series, "Dinah!" (1974-1980). From 1989 to 1991 she hosted a weekly program, "A Conversation with Dinah."

Shore also starred in several motion pictures, recorded more than 70 hit songs, and increased the popularity and acceptance of women's professional golf with her Dinah Shore Classic, a major Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament she hosted beginning in 1972. She won eight Emmy Awards (1954-1957, 1959, 1973, 1974, 1976) and was honored with a George Foster Peabody Award, recognizing excellence in broadcasting, in 1958.
